Will Smith Discusses the "Rage" Behind the Chris Rock Slap at the 2022 Oscars
In his first major TV interview since the incident.
Will Smith is opening up about slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars in his first major TV interview since the awards show. The actor discussed what led him to get physical with the comedian.
“There’s many nuances and complexities to it, you know, but at the end of the day, I just — I lost it,” he said on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
“I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody’s going through,” he added. “You just don’t know what’s going on with people. And I was going through something that night. Not that that justifies my behavior at all.”
In case you need a refresher, Chris mocked Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith‘s shaved head despite her having Alopecia, which she has been open about struggling with. Will then went on stage and slapped Chris.
“It was a lot of things,” The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum added. “It was the little boy watching his mother beat up his father. All of that bubbled up in that moment. You know, just, that’s not who I want to be. I was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time.”
