New Netflix Docuseries To Follow Couple Embroiled in Major Cryptocurrency Scam
Created by the director of ‘Tiger King’ and ‘FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.’
Netflix is producing a documentary series that follows one of the biggest cryptocurrency scams.
Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan conspired to launder 120,000 Bitcoin following the hack of a virtual currency exchange in 2016. The pair created fake online identities per the sudden jump in Bitcoin’s value, which skyrocketed from $71 million USD to nearly $5 billion USD. They subsequently bought physical assets and NFTs and liquidated their digital money, while investigators sought to uncover their tracks on the blockchain.
The series will be directed and produced by Chris Smith, notable for Tiger King and FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. He will be joined by executive producer Nick Bilton, whose works include American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road and Fake Famous, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.
