Dauphinette Uses Beetle Wings and Golden Leaves in FW22 Collection
Sustainable designer Olivia Cheng uses unconventional ways to spark creativity.
Designer Olivia Cheng has come a long way with her sustainable fashion label Dauphinette, which she launched at 18 years old in 2018. Four years in, the creative opened her second brick-and-mortar location in New York last fall and has now showcased her Fall/Winter 2022 collection via an intimate presentation at New York Fashion Week.
Titled “Tasting Menu,” the presentation explores the educational influence behind fashion, sparking creativity and curiosity through the use of unconventional techniques and materials. 24-karat gold electroplated ginkgo leaves construct a halter neck top, accompanied by a red skirt and yellow fringed shoes. Following up are a series of looks featuring ethically-harvested beetle wings, which are found on puff sleeve dresses, silk shirts, knit sweaters and more, adding a pop of color to each garment.
Elsewhere, colorful graphic illustrations take over coats and skirts, as well as long-sleeved tees and underwear, which is paired with baggy jeans for a ’00s-style fit. Further standouts include camo print found on dresses and trousers, while feathered fringes add a dramatic touch to head accessories and gowns.
