'Money Heist: Korea' Stars on the Rising Influence of K-Content
Yunjin Kim, Park Haesoo and Yoo Jitae sit down with HYPEBEAST Korea to chat about their latest project.
Following the global success of Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, Netflix announced that a South Korean remake was on the way. The news came after the streaming platform unveiled its plans on expanding its Korean content with the release of hit titles like All of Us Are Dead and Hellbound.
Sitting down with HYPEBEAST Korea during the premiere of Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area, Yunjin Kim, who plays Seon Woojin (the equivalent of Inspector Raquel Murillo in the original series) shared: “I personally tried not to be too influenced by the original show. The two characters look similar in a way, but are also extremely different so I had no choice but to approach Seon Woojin in a different way.” Yoo Jitae, who portrays Professor, added: “I had a mission to complete as the Korean version of Professor. I really thought about how to explain and deliver his grand scheme to his team, as well as the audience.”
When asked about the global influence of Korean content today, the cast started by talking about Yoo and Kim’s hits — Oldboy and Lost. “It seems like we were in some of the Korean film industry’s most defining moments — from my role in Shiri to Jitae in Oldboy and Haesoo in Squid Game. I’m so proud that I’m sitting here with them today.” Park Haesoo, who plays Berlin in the latest series, continued: “I think Squid Game was released at the right timing, with the transition from TV to streaming platforms. There were also so many actors before us who have paved the way so I’m grateful.”
