Originally opened at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts in 2019, the “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” exhibition is making its way to New York City.

Celebrating the couturier and his eponymous brand Mugler, the retrospective, taking place at the Brooklyn Museum, will display everything from costumes and photographs to films and unpublished archives. The exhibit, curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, showcases roughly 130 outfits, as well as accessories and sketches, with a special gallery dedicated to Mugler’s fragrances.

NYC will be the show’s final destination, after garnering over a million visitors in Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and France. Visitors will be able to explore Mugler’s inspiration from fantasy, glamor, science fiction, eroticism and more, with the experience opening with a life-size 3D hologram bringing the legendary designer’s creations to life. In addition to the garments, the show puts focus on the significance of photography in fashion, spotlighting works by Mugler’s collaborators such as Lillian Bassman, Guy Bourdin, David LaChapelle, Karl Lagerfeld, Sarah Moon, Pierre et Gilles, Herb Ritts and Ellen von Unwerth.

Loriot spoke of the exhibit, “The constant innovations, inventions, and avant-garde architectural silhouettes in the work of Mugler have marked an era. His singular style found a place in the history of fashion that still has a powerful influence on today’s generation of couturiers, not only because of its designs, but also because of the strong message of inclusivity, diversity, and empowerment in his body of work.” He continued, “To present the exhibition I created with him, in the city he lived in and loved so much, is the most beautiful tribute to celebrate the man and the artist’s legacy.”

“Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” will run from November 18, 2022 to May 7, 2023, with tickets available on the Brooklyn Museum’s website.

While you’re here, take a look at some of Thierry Mugler’s most provocative and fetishistic designs.
