Presented by MAMA, a nomadic art platform devoted to showcasing the work of women artists.
Following the presentation of “FETISH,” an exhibition honoring sexual desire from a feminine lens, MAMA introduces “MAXXED,” featuring Lorena Levi’s newest body of work, which explores the internal psychology of vulnerable masculinities subjected to contemporary online subcultures.
The portfolio of the Turkish-born, London-based artist is deeply engrossed in the snapshot of personal histories, which she illustrates through narrative painting and portraiture. Levi often references Frida Kahlo and Paulo Rego’s psychological portraits with an impressive degree of integrity, depth and complexity. Among other of her inspirations are Alice Neel’s and Chantal Joffe, yet unique to her practice is the use of hardwood rather than canvas, adding depth to her narrative compositions.
“MAXXED” presents a nuanced body of work born from Levi’s own ethnographic observation of social dynamics within online incel (involuntary celibates) communities. According to the Anti-Defamation League, “Incels” are defined as “Heterosexual men who blame women and society for their lack of romantic success.” The term can also be used “To address individuals frustrated by their lack of sexual experience with women.”
Critical to the project was Levi’s determination to remain an unbiased third-party observer, “Focusing on the subjects’ emotional experiences and childhood memories rather than socio-political views or personal ideologies.” Thus, the works presented in the show are envisioned portraits of conversations visually contextualized through different symbolic and sensory elements.
The artist shared in a press release: “I want my portraits to have a cinematic feeling — like a film still with a very clearly tangible before and after to the scene being depicted. That’s what makes a painting feel more like a story. I have focused on uncovering key elements of their personal histories and tracking how their thinking has evolved throughout their participation in the group. Are they trying to rehabilitate? How successful can a forum with a purpose like this one be?”
Through artworks like “A Second Doll” or “Close enough to touch,” Levi explores how early childhood can become the foundation of one’s gender ideals. “MAXXED” by Lorena Levi will be available to view from April 15-16 at MAMA’s nomadic space in East London.
