TikTok Thinks You Should Recreate Glam From the Year Your Mom Was Born
Beauty fans just unlocked an unlikely source of inspiration.
Thanks to TikTok, the references for makeup looks are seemingly never-ending. Recently, beauty fans on the platform have looked to the makeup aesthetic from the year they were born to experiment with new glam. But, just like most short-lived trends on TikTok, creators have turned it into a brand new look entirely — this time, one that draws beauty inspiration from the year our moms were born.
While the original birth year makeup trend harped on the ’90s renaissance and our obsession with nostalgic beauty looks, this new iteration challenges beauty fans to explore unfamiliar decades of makeup. Although vintage-inspired glam sometimes makes an appearance on the app, this trend in particular has allowed creators to reinvent past beauty trends while using their favorite modern-day products.

Whether it’s ’70s powder blue eyeshadow or neon blush from the ’80s, the trend has led to a plethora of innovative makeup details. For many creators, it’s served as a way to execute looks they wouldn’t otherwise wear — but it’s also led to a fair share of skepticism. Some commenters claim that makeup from their mom’s birth year is too unwearable to recreate, while others have been poking fun at the difference in decades. “My mum was born in ‘53 … Sometimes I feel like I’m too old for this app,” one user writes.

Even though Y2K makeup is currently all over our feeds, retro beauty looks are becoming another major source of inspiration on TikTok. For members of Gen Z, bold makeup from previous decades can be a bit daunting compared to the influx of clean girl beauty looks on the platform. But, sometimes the most unlikely source of inspiration is also the most influential one.
