With the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards taking over Newark’s Prudential Center last night, stars showed off some of their best looks on the red carpet as well as on stage. Along with big labels like Tom Ford worn by Gigi Hadid and Moschino worn by Lizzo, emerging designers also made it to the red carpet, catching our attention. Among the best dressed, Bella Hadid sported jewelry by Chrome Hearts and a sleek neutral two-piece accented with yellow prints created by none other than London-based Charlotte Knowles, known to be loved by stars like Solange and Euphoria‘s Hunter Schafer.

Central Saint Martins alumnus Charlotte Knowles made her London Fashion Week debut in 2018 as part of Fashion East, a non-profit initiative that serves as a platform for new designers. For her namesake label she runs with partner Alexandre Aresenault, she takes inspiration from the strength of women, creating looks combining femininity with deconstruction, and continuously strives to represent women in the fashion industry. “When designing clothes for women, in my opinion a female gaze is always going to be more personal to the perspective of a male gaze,” the designer explains in an interview with Dazed. Signature design elements include corset-like silhouettes inspired by push-up bras, as seen on the 2019 Fall/Winter runway.

Although a young label, Charlotte Knowles continues to make its way through the competitive fashion industry by landing big retailers like SSENSE and Dover Street Market as well as an editorial featuring Brooke Candy. With scoring a big moment on the red carpet at the VMAs, we can expect to see more from the brand. Stay tuned as Charlotte Knowles is also set to showcase its latest collection at London Fashion Week this September.
