DAME's Reusable Period Pads Are an Innovation in Sustainability
On top of reducing plastic waste, the pads are also leak-proof, odorless and super absorbent.
DAME, creator of the world’s first reusable tampon applicator, has launched reusable period pads, an innovation that reduces plastic waste and provides a drier, more comfortable alternative to traditional pads.
Made of natural materials including organic cotton and Lyocell, the pads can absorb 10 times their weight and instantly wick away moisture. Even when scrunched up, they won’t leak liquid, doing away with the wet diaper feeling that can make menstruation uncomfortable. The pads arrive in an airtight, watertight and odor-tight pouch that easily fits into most bags. The pouch even doubles as a rinsing station — simply fill it with water and let the pads soak before you pop them in the washing machine (though it’s not necessary, pre-soaking the pads rinses out blood and allows users to wash them in the same cycle as their clothes, instead of separately).
“I always found using pads a really demoralizing experience,” DAME co-founder Celia Pool said. “From the rustling sound between my legs to the plasticky feel against my skin to the weird smell of synthetic florals, just, no,” she explained, adding that reusable pads are not only sustainable, but also money-saving. Instead of constantly replenishing your cabinet with new boxes of tampons and pads, DAME is a one-time purchase of approximately $44 USD and includes a liner, regular pad and night pad.
