Ashley Williams FW21 Is Peak Kitsch
Puppies, pentagrams and piercings take over the designer’s latest collection.
Ashley Williams works in dualities: sweet and sour, glamorous and subversive, polished and rough-hewn. For Fall/Winter 2021, Williams takes her darkly kitschy aesthetic to a new level, presenting a collection that deals in airbrushed puppies, oversized bows and unabashed sex.
One standout of the season, a poofy gown fit for a deranged Disney princess is printed with baby animals alongside a scantily clad centerfold — a juxtaposition that sums up Williams’ sensibility. Bondage pants are worn with a shapeless cardigan dotted with large silk bows; a ladylike frock with a frilled collar is decorated with images of barbel piercings; a fluffy angora sweater reads “JESUS HATES.” The pairing of opposing tropes may be heavy-handed, but it makes for delightfully over-the-top fashion fodder. The street style set is sure to gobble up punchy separates including a pentagram-printed cardigan, heart-shaped handbags and a cropped tee bearing a rather crazed-looking poodle.
