Beyoncé Thanks Queer Community, Moments Before Losing To Alleged Queer Baiter

Was Beyoncé snubbed for Styles?

After winning the award for Best Dance/Electronic Album, icon Beyoncé was once again overlooked for Album of the Year, despite Renaissance‘s blatant impact in the music industry. As for who won, on the other hand, fans were not happy to learn the musician Harry Styles was selected.

“I’ve been so inspired by every artist in this category with me,” Styles opened his speech before stating a sentence that infuriated many. “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often,” he spoke of winning the highly acclaimed Album of the Year award.

Viewers immediately began dragging the artist in confusion on what he meant by “people like me.” In recent months, the discussion has boiled over, questioning whether Styles was queer-baiting in attempts to seem edgy, and therefore, excel in his career. The fact that Beyoncé thanked the queer community while Styles,  was constantly accused of queer baiting, makes a sentiment of being different. Many found his speech to be questionable and for some who took their opinions to Twitter, laughable.

“I think it’s important for us to remember there is no best in music,” he also spoke during his speech. Most likely assuming the backlash from winning over Beyoncé was brewing. For context, Beyoncé has never won Album of the Year, despite being nominated four times and utterly rewriting the script of album rollout with her 2013 self-titled album and borderline short film, Beyoncé. To make matters worse, the last time a woman won the Album of the Year award was Lauryn Hill in 1999.

In her acceptance speech, after securing her 32nd Grammy which placed her as the most decorated winner, Beyoncé began by thanking not only God, and her family, but also the queer community for its support — and creating the genre. The queer community is notoriously overlooked in grand moments in the media from straight actors taking queer roles from the queer community to just now, in 2023 acknowledging the talent of its members, with transgender artists like Kim Petras being the first to win a Grammy — in its history.

As for whether Styles is actually queer and refusing to confirm his identitiy to the public… we’ll never know, unless the artist decides to open that door.
