Victoria Beckham Explores Freedom in SS21 Collection

The socially distanced presentation showcased relaxed silhouettes perfect for WFH.

Following names like Eckhaus Latta and Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham has now presented her Spring/Summer 2021 collection with social distancing measures. This season, the designer took inspiration from the notion of freedom and limitations, teasing the show with a provocative image of a translucent blouse showing a model’s nipples.

The Instagram post sparked debate among commenters, with some calling the design “tasteless and classless,” a “violation” of the platform’s policy, while others pointed out that the image shouldn’t be problematic: “We see topless men all the time but when it’s a woman, it’s suddenly ‘inappropriate’ and ‘unnecessary’ and not ‘classy’. Pretty sad some still have this mindset.”

Beckham shared ahead of the presentation: “Limitations can be liberating. Working remotely, for this collection we reacted spontaneously. We were instinctive. We asked ourselves what has changed? Who do we want to be? What will we desire?” The designer explores freedom throughout her latest range, encouraging everyone to be themselves by dressing in any way they want.

“There are different silhouettes, different facets of dressing – coats, fluid dresses, denim and elongated trousers. Hemlines are longer, fits are easier, there’s a fluidity and ease. Really, it’s about a true wardrobe,” the creative director added. The resulting designs boast a vast color palette, featuring neutral tones as a base and bold hues like green and purple serving as accents. Relaxed ‘fits dominate the collection, including flare pants, matching top and bottom sets and flowing dress silhouettes. Pieces arrive with shirring and cut-out details along the waist and on the chest. Accentuating the looks are bold necklaces and heels with chain hardware.
