"Skinimalism" Is Leading the Beauty Industry in 2022
Prepare to clear out your beauty shelves.
While extensive, multi-step skincare routines have become popular in recent years, with one viral must-have product after another dominating the online beauty conversation, a new trend known as “skinimalism” has recently emerged.
With “skinimalism,” you’re condensing your 10-step routine into your top five or top three most needed products. Most skin types will benefit from this practice, but from personal experience, it works best for acne-prone and hyperpigmented skin.
On Instagram, beauty “shelfie” pics featuring long rows of face oils, serums and masks are becoming a thing of the past, as many are beginning to realize how damaging trying out so many new products can be to one’s skin barriers. Certain ingredients in moisturizers and toners are notorious for clogging pores and causing breakouts, leaving behind scarring. Some products can even cause excess oil production resulting in acne flare-ups. The solution is simply eliminating unnecessary products from your routines.
In an interview with Vogue, Dr. Anna Puri of Skinora UK advised, “I expect that 2022 will see more people opting for simpler skin-care routines and a minimalistic approach. After a few trials and errors, many of our clients are starting to realize that less is more when it comes to skin care and that using too many products doesn’t guarantee effective results; it can sometimes even do the opposite. Simply keeping your skin hydrated and protected can make a big difference.”
This trend doesn’t mean you have to downgrade your preferred routine. Always be sure to hit those four effective points: cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect. Your skin and makeup applications will thank you for it.
