Fendi's SS23 Womenswear Collection Explores Duality and Femininity
Where utility meets luxury.
Fendi’s new Spring/Summer 2023 campaign sees creative director Kim Jones revisiting the brand’s roots, and bringing signature design details into a modern era.
The collection’s clothing takes cues from the turn of the millennium, fusing minimalist style with eclectic touches of pop-inspired hues. Paying tribute to the brand’s origins, the collection features the iconic logo, first introduced in 2000, alongside a floral print taken from Fendi’s archives, all the while transforming house codes into contemporary designs.
“What is particularly interesting to me about FENDI is exploring the notion of functional utility alongside femininity – because the Fendi women are strong women with full, busy lives,” Jones explains in a press release. “It’s about continuity. I am interested in looking at things that Karl has done, and seeing how we can develop them – both visually and technically,” he adds. “At FENDI, I am constantly thinking about practicality as well as luxury,” Jones continues. “Adding heavy hardware to something very soft both gives it real functionality and makes it interesting,” he adds.
Fabrics like technical organza, cashmere, leather and nylon jersey merge to create an effortless, sports-luxe aesthetic, bringing luxurious satin down to earth by mixing it with mesh and pairing it with tennis shoes and rubber platforms. Elsewhere, the hybrid collection layers slouchy cuts with racerback silhouettes and light tailoring. The color palette features neutral hues of beige and brown, punctuated with spring brights like vibrant pink, cornflower blue and vivid green.
The inverted Fendi “F” features prominently throughout SS23, from appearing across footwear silhouettes to making up a bag’s handle. Standout accessories within the collection include the brand’s Peekaboo bag, sliced in half to offer a look inside its inner workings. Duality permeates the collection, with high-shine leathers crafted alongside clean canvas for a pared-back, but still decadent attitude to dressing.
