Saul Nash's SS23 Collection, "SIBLINGS," Is Rooted in Togetherness
“For me, siblings extend past blood relations,” says Nash.
Saul Nash just unveiled his first new collection since winning the International Woolmark Prize back in April. Titled “SIBLINGS,” the Spring/Summer 2023 collection is inspired by both Nash’s own siblings and the chosen families that surround him.
“For me, siblings extend past blood relations,” says Nash in a press release. “I mostly recall my relationship with my older brother and how we grew into two different people. But I’m also surrounded by individuals who have become family – they’re not my blood relatives, but I am connected to them like they are my siblings. That always shapes how I see my work. It starts from the men I grew up around and looking at what this all means to me as a man now.”
For the gender-fluid collection, Nash delved into his own personal archives alongside his relationship with his older brother, influenced by the sartorial styles passed on to him at a young age. Like most of us, the designer borrowed his older sibling’s clothes growing up, an experience that seems to make this collection somewhat more relatable than previous ones.
Nash continues to explore themes of masculinity for SS23, explaining that “With a lot of the men I look at, there are always women around them. It was important for me to show not just male siblings, but a wide spectrum.” Shot by British photographer Ewen Spencer, the collection’s lookbook stars siblings both blood-related and otherwise, in Saul Nash’s signature style.
In terms of the clothes themselves, the collection is rooted in themes of togetherness and comradery, drawing influence from another kind of sibling-hood: team sports. Featuring a range of baseball tops, basketball shorts and crew neck jumpers, SS23 is focused on durability and movement, introducing tactical mesh holes and waterproof fabrics. The standout piece is dubbed the “Looking over my shoulder” Jacket, adorned with a printed photograph of Nash and his older brother. “SIBLINGS” also sees Nash debut a collaboration with Sheep Inc., a sustainably-made, carbon-negative knitwear company.
